This month we are delighted to welcome Distinguished Visiting Fellow (DVF), Professor Martha Albertson Fineman. Martha is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of Law at Emory University and will be hosted by Professors Sean Coyle and Marie Fox from Birmingham Law School. An internationally renowned scholar of the highest standing, Martha's work addresses complex and boundary-transcending themes of human vulnerability and resilience. The diversity dividend: why interdisciplinarity strengthens research.
The role and importance of disciplinary diversity has recently been highlighted by an analysis of the impact case studies submitted for assessment to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Nearly two-thirds of the cases submitted drew on research from multiple disciplines, providing compelling evidence that disciplinary diversity delivers impact.

Evaluating Interdisciplinary Research: a practical guide (Professor Veronica Strang and Professor Tom McLeish)
Experts in interdisciplinary research, from UK and EU funding organisations and from a number of British Universities, participated in a workshop at Durham's Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) in early 2015 to compare and discuss methods of assessment and the criteria applied to interdisciplinary research (IDR), and to discuss how best to address the challenges of evaluating and re-valuing interdisciplinary research.
