Held in June, this year's theme was financial wellbeing and working age people: addressing the challenges ahead. Presentations were delivered by experts from a wide variety of sectors and provoked some fascinating debates.

Special award for CHASM’s Founding Advisory Board Chair
Sir Brian Pomeroy, CHASM’s Advisory Board founding Chair for six years, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Birmingham on 11th July for his outstanding contribution to the financial inclusion sector and for his services to the University.

CHASM PhD Student Profile - Resya Kania
Supervised by Louise Overton, Resya is interested in assessing how the concept of financial inclusion is transferred into policy and the potential contribution of financial inclusion policy to policy changes in other sectors such as economic and welfare.

Problem Gambling Report
CHASM's Professor Karen Rowlingson has collaborated with Carl Packman from Toynbee Hall to carry out a rapid assessment review of problem gambling in Birmingham, in conjunction with key stakeholders in Birmingham City Council. The report estimates that there are 12,000 ‘problem gamblers’ in Birmingham, with a further 48,000 at risk of problem gambling.

Radio 4 Debt Special
Professor Karen Rowlingson featured on the ‘You and Yours’ Debt Special radio show on Monday 2nd April hosted by Radio 4 DJ Samantha Fenwick. Karen discussed her research findings and information from her Conversation article on how attitudes to debt have changed over time, and the impact that this is having across the UK.

Independent financial advice about funding social care in later life – findings from the IF project
On Wednesday 21 March CHASM and the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) hosted a joint seminar based on research by Kate Baxter, Emily Heavey and Yvonne Birks from the Social Policy Research Unit at the University of York.

Charitable food provision as an ‘emergency’ response: Where do we go from here?
On Wednesday 2 May Dr Kayleigh Garthwaite, Birmingham Fellow and CHASM Associate, presented her research on the reasons for an increase in reliance on foodbanks in the UK, from ‘Universal Credit failures’ to longer term income insecurity, which is susceptible to small crises up to life-changing ‘tipping points’.
