Club Update: E-newsletter

Take a deep breath...
Whether you are reading this as a newly elected committee member or as an outgoing one, congratulations, you made it to the Easter holidays!  With the knowledge that the majority of clubs will have held their AGMs, this is as good a time as any to thank you for all the work that you have put in so far. It has been a big year for sport at Birmingham, with the announcement of the new £50m sports facilities to the imminent arrival of the Jamaican track and field team prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games being just two of the bigger developments.

What has been great from my point of view have been the changes that I’ve seen in clubs this year. From the improved management of your budgets to the greater engagement of committees it has been an even more exciting time to be involved in a sports club. Add to this that all clubs now have a three-year development plan in place and you can start to see the foundations that you have put in place on which your successors will hope to build. There is still work to be done, however, in terms of handovers to ensure that your new committees get the best possible start and that your legacy continues to be built upon.  Anything London 2012 can do...

Club Forms
Thank you to all that handed in club forms at the end of the term; it was especially appreciated that nearly everyone made the deadline for the budgets.

There are a number of clubs, however, who still have forms to submit and the list can be found here.  If you are on the list then please ensure that your club fills in the paperwork as soon as possible. This is especially important for Committee contact details as we need to contact new committees with regards to Club Conference very soon. Unless it has been agreed, no clubs will have access to their budgets until all forms have been handed in.

Budgets 2012-13

With all budgets now in, the incredibly fun process (no really, it’s like a big jigsaw) of fitting all requests into the overall Club Development budget has begun. A few stats to put things into perspective:

  • 6.3%: the effective reduction in the Club Development budget from 2011-12 due to inflation and rising costs
  • 4: number of new clubs the budget is supporting for 2012-13
  • £55,432: amount requested beyond what there is to distribute
  • 22.6%: the average increase in grant requested by individual clubs compared to last year’s requests

So, as you can see there is quite a lot of work to be done over the Easter break. I have already been in contact with a number of you in relation your requests, but don’t worry if I haven’t - it’s a long process.

Once all budgets fit into the overall Club Development budget the next step is for them to be confirmed by the Sport Development Manager, Director of Sport and VP Sport. Once this has happened, budgets will be emailed out to you and your new committees in May ready for Club Conference in June.

New Website

New Website
If you haven’t seen the new website design then please take a look:

It now provides a much more rewarding user experience for anyone interested in University sport and should allow UBSport to take full advantage of the prospective students hoping to come to Birmingham.  The Marketing form you filled in will be the basis of your club pages but if there are any changes that you would like to make then please let me know at any time.

Squash

Club of the Month: Squash
BUCS Championships was always going to make this month’s decision difficult. Over the course of 5 days, UBSport had 135 competitors competing in 11 sports across 2 cities in 9 different venues in what was a hectic few days in the BUCS calendar. There were medals for Badminton, Fencing, Hockey, Judo and Lacrosse, but the standout performance club performance came from Squash.

Following on from a successful league campaign that saw all men’s teams finish first and both women’s teams second, the Championships gave the club the chance to prove what they could do when the pressure was really on.

The W1s came up against a tough Leeds Met team and bowed out in the semi-final to pick up a Championship bronze medal. The M2s had already set up a Trophy final before coming to Sheffield swept aside Surrey 5-0 in a show of class to pick up Gold. Finally the M1s, having overcome Loughborough in tight semi-final, came up against a UWE team that included players ranked 8 and 35 in the world. Birmingham performed superbly, but ultimately lost out 2-3 to pick up silver. Read more about there efforts here.
