University of Birmingham Sport: E-newsletter

Club Update, February 2012
Hopefully you will have fully settled into term two and everything is going as smoothly as possible.  It was great to get the chance to meet up with all clubs over the first weeks of term as it can sometimes seem like the only contact we get with clubs is through email.  It was brilliant to hear how well you’re all doing and find out about some of the progress that has been made; please keep telling us everything that you are doing!

Now that February is upon us everything can seem to happen very quickly with AGMs to hold, club forms to fill in and, of course, looming deadlines.  Remember, that if you ever need help in what you are doing or don’t understand something that you are being asked to do, all you need to do is ask and we will do everything we can do to support you, starting with the information in this month’s Club Update:

  • Development Meetings: Review
  • Club AGMs & 2012-13 Forms
  • Birmingham Pussycats dazzle on Soccer AM
  • Employability Workshop
  • Club/Team Photos: Collection
  • Alumni Sports Day 2012
  • Club of the Month
  • Upcoming Dates
  • Also in the News

Development Meetings: Review
A big thank you to everyone that came to the meetings in January. The vast majority of clubs have had a great start to the year with increases in members for almost all clubs, as can be seen here.

It was also great to see the effort that had gone into the Development Plans. Some of the thought that had gone into improving your clubs was impressive and it will be exciting to see how this will be built on in the coming months.

A reminder that the next stage is to breakdown your objectives into a three-year period.  To do this we will be sending out an editable (and, following feedback, slightly revised) document with all other club forms, which have a completion deadline of 23rd March. We will be running a workshop closer to the time should there be any questions or queries (see below).

Club AGMs & 2012-13 Forms
We are now in the period where you should be getting ready to hold your club AGM to review the year and elect next year’s committee. The guidelines for AGMs can be found herePlease remember to let us know when and where you will be holding your meeting.

Club Forms. A reminder that club forms will be sent out for you to fill in on Monday 13th February.  The deadline for submission of all forms is the end of term, Friday 23rd March.

To help with your club forms I will be running drop-in sessions for you to come and ask any questions that you might have.  The dates for both are below; all I would ask is that if you would like to come in that you let me know when on those days you would like to come in so that I can keep that slot free for your club.

  • Development Plan sessions: Wednesday 29 Feb & Wednesday 7th March, 10:00-17:00
  • Budget sessions: Thursday 1st March & Thursday 8th March, 10:00-17:00

Soccer AM

Birmingham Pussycats dazzle on Soccer AM
A big shout out to our very own Birmingham Pussycats who performed live on Sky Sport’s Soccer AM on Saturday 21st January.

The video clip of the performance can be seen below, but be wary, it is not for the faint-hearted: there are more thrusts than at a Red Arrows aerial show:

Employability Workshop
Muirhead Lecture Theatre, Thursday 16th February, 18:00

As mentioned in the Club Development meetings with clubs, we are lucky to have John Rider as a guest speaker at our Employability Workshop. John is Chair of the Birmingham County Sport Partnership, Chairman of the Regional Institute of Directors and also does a lot of work promoting and enabling internships with universities in Birmingham, including UoB.

The workshop will look at how you can best represent the work that you’ve done on your committee on your CV and in interviews and we’ll look at how you can use your experiences to really stand out against the crowd.

The workshop is free and open to all club members, but will be aimed at the skills committee members will have gained during their time in post.

Meeting

Club/Team Photographs: Collection
Wednesday 8th February, 09:30-15:30 from Squash Court 7.

Club/team photographs are available on the above date and can ONLY be collected by a club committee member.  This will also be your  ONLY opportunity to collect the photographs.

Each order should be checked to ensure it is correct and then signed for upon collection by the committee member present. If you have a large club and know that a lot of frames have been ordered, be sure to bring along a couple of extra pairs of hands to help with the carrying.

There are a number of clubs that have members who have appeared in the photographs but not paid for their club fees. Clubs will not be able to pick up ANY of their club’s photographs until ALL individuals have paid.  A full list of clubs and unpaid members can be downloaded here, but the clubs affected are below:

  • American Football; Athletics & XC; Cool Runnings; Basketball Women; Cricket Men; Cricket Women; Cycling; Fencing; Football Men; Golf; Gymnastics; Hockey; Lacrosse; Rowing; Rugby League; Rugby Union Men; Taekwondo; Tennis; and Water Polo

Meeting

Alumni Sports Day 2012
This year sees the return of the 11th Annual Alumni Sports day. The event will be taking place on Saturday 9th June 2012 across campus. We’re hoping to make this year’s event bigger and better than ever before.  The importance of communicating and engaging with your alumni is paramount as if looked after properly they can potentially provide a source of funding for the future.

Alumni Sports day is a great way to get your alumni involved in the first instance and from there UBS Marketing will work with you to build an alumni programme. If you’re interested in entering your club into the Alumni Sports day programme, please email Kate (UBS Marketing) on k.allum@bham.ac.uk.

Lifesaving

Club of the Month: Lifesaving
Lifesaving have had an outstanding year so far.  Competitively the club have seen success in a number of competitions across the country, which has been all the more impressive due to parallel success of the club’s B Team.

Such strength and depth should hold them in good stead for the annual University of Birmingham competition, which welcomes teams from around the country.  Held at the Munrow Sports Centre on Saturday 11th February, the club will compete to test their speed, stamina and ability to deal with a number of emergency situations.

But the club shows no sign  of being content with this success as the club turned up with one of the most comprehensive development plans of all clubs.
