University of Birmingham Sport: E-newsletter

Club Update, January 2012
Happy New Year and welcome back for what should be the start of a very exciting year.  The BUCS season is fast approaching its conclusion with final league positions, cup runs and championship performances all reaching their climax.  The introduction of the ’Get Involved’ Sports Fair brings you another chance to attract members to your sport.  And there’s the small matter of the Olympics, too. With UBSport hosting the Jamaican Track and Field team’s pre-Olympic Training camp the spotlight will be on everyone connected with UBSport to really deliver.

This is also the term that you can really make your mark on sport here at Birmingham.  With the introduction of development plans and the start of club AGMS in February as well as the completion of club forms and budgets, the next few months can really make a difference to what you and your club can achieve.  But don’t let that overwhelm you; there is a huge amount of support, starting with the January Club Meetings.

Committee Volunteering Hours
Our push to get all the hours the you volunteer for your club recognised has been gathering momentum with more and more committee members getting involved in the scheme.

With term one completed we have had 20 students hand in their volunteer hours, which total an amazing 994 hours!  To date, the top three volunteers are:

  • William Hoad, Kayak
  • Laura Bass, Athletics and XC
  • Rudi Vrabel, Tennis

With the top 10 volunteers by hours awarded a £50 voucher to spend at the Bullring there is still every incentive for you to fill in your volunteer matrix and be in line to receive the voucher along with a welcome boost to your CV.  For more information please contact our Volunteer Development Manager, Gary Yates, on g.p.yates@bham.ac.uk.

Employability Workshop, 16 February
To compliment recognition of your volunteering, UBS and the Guild of Students will be continuing to help you get the most out of your time as a committee member by running an Employability Workshop.

The workshop will look at how you can best represent the work that you’ve done on your committee on your CV and in interviews and we’ll look at how you can use your experiences to really stand out against the crowd.

We’re also lucky to have John Rider as our guest speaker.  John is Chair of the Birmingham County Sport Partnership, Chairman of the Regional Institute of Directors and also does a lot of work promoting and enabling internships with Universities in Birmingham, including UoB.

The workshop is open to all and will take place on 16 February 2012 at 18:00; more information will become available in the next Club Update but please look out for it as it will really help in making the most out of your hard work.

Netball

Club of the Month: Netball
The Netball club have had an outstanding term across all four of their teams.  Racing out of the blocks, their early season form led to an unbeaten October.  November saw some outstanding results for the 1st team including two wins over Loughborough, one of which included a thrilling cup comeback from 8 points down going into the final quarter.

Together with success on the court they have looked to develop their club with the introduction of a buddy system for Freshers and a more inclusive social environment.

With their Coach going on maternity leave over Christmas the club have worked hard to make sure that everything is in place for them to continue their form through to the conclusion of the season.
