Membership Fees and Swipe Cards
Memberships across the board are doing fantastically well with the vast majority of clubs are very close to their targets, which is great to see.  Please remember that everyone attending your sessions should now be a paid-up member of your club.  It is your responsibility as the committee to make sure that members are paying for the facilities and coaching that they are using, and to ensure that they are insured should anything happen to them.

Spot checks will be taking place throughout November and any members found not to have paid will be asked to pay or leave the session.  If you are having any problems then please let us know and we can come down and help at your session.

Membership Numbers: To see who the biggest club is in terms of membership numbers and how your club compares, click here.

Swipe Cards: A reminder that all club members need to bring and use their swipe cards when trying to enter the Munrow Sports Centre.  It is not enough to say that you have a training session so please remember to bring your card at all times or you will not be let into the Centre.

Added Club Benefits: Hi Performance Sessions
A reminder that being part of a club gives you access to a wide range of extra benefits that are provided by the Hi Performance Centre.  The documents below detail all of these and include the timetable of the support available to all clubs.

The sessions listed are available to all members and are partly funded by the Club Development fee that members pay for on top of club membership so make sure you are taking advantage!

New Yoga Session Added: Because of the high levels of demand, HPC have added a new Beginners Yoga at 08:30 on Mondays in the Slater Hall.  Please make the most of it and bring your club!

Korfball Alumni 2011

Alumni Development
UBSport are going to be creating a much better offering to our Alumni and eventually we hope to be able to see them as an additional source for funding, that means more money for your clubs!

We will be creating a UBSport alumni page on the brand-spanking new UBSport website (coming soon!) and a UBSport alumni Facebook page. On these page things like Alumni Sports Day, any famous alumni news stories, and any other extra fundraising opportunities from the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) will be promoted. Our long-term goal is to create a comprehensive alumni program that would include a number of fundraising events (invitational matches current students vs alumni) to keep the alumni updated and make them miss their days at university!

If you would like to get involved in this then please email Kate Allum for more information: k.allum@bham.ac.uk

Sports Fair: Feedback and Photos
Thank you to everyone on helping to put on such a fantastic Sports Fair!  Having talked to a number of you in club meetings, it sounds like one of the most successful in terms of sign-ups and those at trials and welcome sessions.  A selection of photos can be seen below:

There have been some recurring themes in initial feedback so I thought I’d give some information regarding some of your thoughts:

  • One-way system: generally well received leading to better numbers in the Sports Hall and demonstrations but the system within the halls will be looked at to stop bottle-necks.
  • Opening hours: the Fair is traditionally open late to accommodate late-finishing lectures but these are obviously few and far between so we will be reviewing opening times.
  • Electricity: the cost to provide enough generators for all clubs to have electricity is upwards of £4,000 so we will continue with charging stations, but give you more notice so you can bring more laptops if needed.

If you come up with any more suggestions for next year then please don’t hesitate to contact me with your ideas.

Gym and Tramp

Club of the Month: Gymnastics and Trampolining
Gymnastics and Trampolining have had an outstanding start to the year and thanks to their recruitment drive have been the first club to have met their ENTIRE income target after just five weeks of term.

Thanks to an eye-catching Sports Fair stall, some fantastic welcome sessions and socials the club have seen their numbers jump by over 40 members, making them the third largest club on campus with 130 members.

Last year the club went through a number of challenges and considered splitting into separate clubs but decided to stick together and have shown a  new level of determination to develop both performances and the social side of their club.

And even having reached their full income target the club are continuing to put on fundraising events to make the best of their great start to the year, including a gymnastics competition on 23 November.

Upcoming Dates
A few upcoming dates to be aware of in November:

5th Nov: xpLosION, 17:00, Bournbrook Pitch. Nottingham Trent Renegades travel to Birmingham to take on the Lions in the season opener, complete with performances from Cheerleading, DanceSoc and of course, fireworks!

16th Nov: Sports Night, 21:00, Guild of Students. The third Sports Night of term gives you another chance to socialise with all clubs; just remember that after you leave the venue on a Wednesday night you are still responsible for your club members’ actions. Please ensure your club members leave the venue and go home quietly without disturbing residents.

29th Nov: ’Hydration’ Lucozade Workshop, 18:30, Munrow Lecture Theatre.  The second of four free workshops run by the Hi Performance Centre will focus on how to stay hydrated before, during and after exercise and the difference it can have to your performance.
