Club Update,
October 2011
Hopefully you are all into the swing of the new year. Sports Fair was a
huge success for UBS overall and with welcome meetings and trials fully underway
it looks set to be another fantastic year.
Having met with just under 30 clubs over the last few days it has been amazing
to hear all of the events, aims and goals that you have planned.
Throughout the year we are going to be working on 3-year development plans to
make sure that you can really set the foundations for sustainable club growth,
making sure that your club builds on the notable successes of 2010-11 and
everything that you have planned for this season.
We will be working towards these plans over the course of this year but, for
now, continue to work as hard as possible to keep your membership numbers up and
the enjoyment levels just as high.

Sports Fair:
Feedback and Photos
Thank you to everyone on helping to put on such a fantastic Sports Fair!
Having talked to a number of you in club meetings, it sounds like one of the
most successful in terms of sign-ups and those at trials and welcome sessions.
A selection of photos can be seen below:
There have been some recurring themes in initial feedback so I thought Id
give some information regarding some of your thoughts:
- One-way system: generally well received leading to better numbers
in the Sports Hall and demonstrations but the system within the halls will
be looked at to stop bottle-necks.
- Opening hours: the Fair is traditionally open late to accommodate
late-finishing lectures but these are obviously few and far between so we
will be reviewing opening times.
- Electricity: the cost to provide enough generators for all clubs
to have electricity is upwards of £4,000 so we will continue with charging
stations, but give you more notice so you can bring more laptops if needed.
If you come up with any more suggestions for next year then please dont
hesitate to contact me with your ideas.

Membership Fees
and Swipe Cards
The deadline for members to pay their fees is now fast approaching. If you
have are a BUCS team sport then your members must be signed up to the club by
Friday 7th October. Without doing so your members will be ineligible
to represent your club in BUCS competitions. For non-BUCS Wednesday teams,
while members can continue to join throughout the year, members who train with
you must also be paid by Friday 7th October or they will not be able to
access the facilities.
Spot checks will be taking place throughout October and any members found not
to have paid will be escorted off the premises.
Swipe Cards: A reminder that all club members need to bring and use their swipe cards when
trying to enter the Munrow Sports Centre. It is not enough to say that
you have a training session so please remember to bring your card at all times
or you will not be let into the Centre.

Added Club
Benefits: Hi Performance Sessions
Being part of a club gives you access to a wide range of extra benefits that are
provided by the Hi Performance Centre. The documents below detail all of
the benefits and include the timetable of the support available to all clubs.
The sessions described are available to all members and are partly
paid for by the Club Development fee that members pay for on top of club
membership so make sure you are taking advantage.

Initiations and
Welcome Meetings
A reminder that initiations at the University of Birmingham will not be
tolerated. By all means enjoy your first socials and have fun but remember
that events should be opt-in only and a non-alcoholic alternative should always
be provided. If any club is found to have forced an individual to do something
that they do not want to do or it comes to light that an individual has not been
picked for a team because of an initiation then there will be subsequent
disciplinary action that will include the removal of committee members from
their positions.

Club of the Month:
Womens Rugby Union
Even though clubs have only just come back, some have been planning for the
season for a long
time. You only have to look at Womens Rugby Union to see how much effort and
planning has been put into your seasons already. The girls are already
storming towards their fundraising target having purchased silicon wristbands,
which they are selling to raise money for the club. They have been lucky
enough to attain sponsorship and have planned (to the last penny!) what they are
going to do with it.
And of course, anyone who was at Sports Fair could not have failed to see
their improvised rugby posts. Not a forward pass in sight.
