There
are three main ways to mark students' work, typically referred to as holistic,
analytic and objective marking. These approaches are equally applicable
to speaking and writing tasks, but in illustrating their use in this module
we shall focus on the assessment of written work. (The assessment of speaking
is the subject of section 14.3.) In this section,
after looking at specific examples of the three approaches 'in action',
we consider the pros and cons of FL essays and the most effective way to
use them for the testing of writing. Finally, we look at the question of
annotating students' work and systems for penalizing linguistic shortcomings.
