  • distinguish the different purposes of language testing;
  • use a variety of test types, including discrete-point, single- and mixed skill;
  • identify the pros and cons of analytic and objective approaches to marking;
  • improve your use of essays as an assessment instrument;
  • employ a variety of oral testing techniques;
  • select appropriate task types for the assessment of the skills of listening and reading;
  • demonstrate awareness of the key issues surrounding target-language testing; · design cloze and C-tests;
  • assess translation as a communicative activity and develop suitable marking schemes.
