  • appreciate the relative importance of language competence and reading ability in the development of L2 reading;
  • explain the role of schemas and background knowledge in L2 reading;
  • distinguish different reading purposes and ways of reading L2 texts;
  • employ certain techniques to improve students' reading speed;
  • identify practical ways to help students process unknown words in an L2 text;
  • devise exercises to raise students' awareness of how texts are typically organized;
  • use a range of tasks to help students understand textual cohesion and coherence at sentence level;
  • explain why extensive reading is important in language learning and set up an extensive L2 reading scheme for your department.
