Scientists take the grind out of producing one of the world’s hardest materials known to mankind
The University has a large portfolio of patents available for licensing to organisations like yours. Whether it’s a life-changing vaccine or a piece of time-saving technology, our intellectual property could become your company’s crowning glory.
Read about a technology that provides a cheaper and more efficient way of processing one of the hardest materials on the planet, which in turn could lead to the production of lighter, stronger and more hardwearing machinery. Scientists at the University of Birmingham have developed a new method of producing boron carbide powder which uses lower temperatures and introduces fewer contaminants than current processing methods.
Licensing partners are currently being sought by the University’s commercialisation arm, Alta Innovations, to commercialise the technology.

Providing a train of thought

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are one example of how funding can support your company to undertake research projects.
Cogitare Ltd, a niche consultancy whose core business is the sale of solutions for the optimisation of rail infrastructure and operations, has recently teamed up with the University of Birmingham’s Centre for Railway Research and Education on a KTP project. The KTP will seek to help the Company develop innovative methods to measure and model ‘real’ rail capacity and to validate and improve capacity simulations and simulators.

West Midlands based SME, Armada, is an IT Company specialising in the development of user assistance systems, including running training courses, developing e-learning systems and online help systems. Armada identified a gap for a social media ‘savvy’ person with key business, marketing and IT skills to improve its website presence using up to the minute communication mechanisms such as Facebook and Twitter. Armada decided that they would address this gap by offering a graduate internship.

Transforming biomedical innovation into enterprise
Opening in September 2014 at the University of Birmingham, the Biomedical Innovation Hub will be a fully serviced biomedical laboratory specifically designed to provide entrepreneurs and innovative start-ups with access to affordable laboratory facilities and equipment, as well as business support and advice.
Hub tenants will benefit from the ideal location of Birmingham Research Park, in the heart of the Edgbaston Medical Quarter, and adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, one of the largest academic trust-based ‘super hospitals’ in the world. With access to world class research at the University of Birmingham, and one of the most significant collections of clinical trials activity in Europe, we can confidently say that companies based here will benefit from a proposition which is unique in the UK.
