Reading and understanding the brief

Understanding the brief is crucial as this will define the type of choices we will make later on. Let's break this down into different elements:

What is the translation for? The aim is to provide instructions on how to cook a traditional Spanish dish called paella. The users of this text will be ordinary people not culinary specialists, so the instructions need to be clear.

Who is the initiator/commissioner? A popular British chef has requested the translation. The need for clarity is emphasized.

User: the readers of the book, which probably means everyone, both lay people and chefs.

Medium: the translation is going to be published in book form, so the translated recipe will have to comply with existing conventions for cooking recipes in (British) English.

As a result of the information provided by the brief, ie emphasis on the clarity of the instructions and on writing an acceptable recipe in English, a communicative approach will be needed.
