Using various types of translation

11.6.1.1
Gist translation

This type of translation can be conducted either in English or the FL, ie it might mean providing a summary translation of an English text in the FL, or vice versa. It might be an individual activity or it could be done in pairs. Possible situations/texts include:

  • tourist information;
  • hotel bookings;
  • medical prospectuses;
  • recipes, etc.

As a variation, you could reproduce 'interpreting situations'; for example two students could be designated speakers of two different languages (English and the FL) and a third could be given the role of mediating between them. Similarly, students could be asked to listen to news/radio in their second language and to report back in English (either orally or in writing). At advanced levels, students could try reporting back in the foreign language.
