General issues in assessment

In this section we look at a number of generic issues that are central to the business of assessment. After considering the nature and purpose of assessment and the key role of learning outcomes, we contrast formative and summative assessment and discuss the different uses assessment can be put to. After suggesting some ways in which you can lighten your marking load, we explore student resistance to assessment and how it can be overcome, as well as the vexed question of plagiarism.
