Translation can readily be
used to reinforce problematic aspects of target language grammar. However,
you should remember that this method:
- is deductive;
- emphasizes structure, not
vocabulary;
- compares language/cultural
systems;
- uses sentences or phrases.
For example, using translation
to consolidate use of the Saxon Genitive in English and to compare this
with the Spanish/French equivalents:
Peter's car el
coche de Pedro/la voiture de Pierre
My father's book el
libro de mi padre/le livre de mon père
