Using translation to reinforce grammatical structures

Translation can readily be used to reinforce problematic aspects of target language grammar. However, you should remember that this method:

  • is deductive;
  • emphasizes structure, not vocabulary;
  • compares language/cultural systems;
  • uses sentences or phrases.

For example, using translation to consolidate use of the Saxon Genitive in English and to compare this with the Spanish/French equivalents:

Peter's car Transparent imageel coche de Pedro/la voiture de Pierre

My father's book Transparent imageel libro de mi padre/le livre de mon père
