We have looked at a wide range
of writing tasks in various teaching situations. You should now take a
few moments to think about your own situation and see whether any of the
materials you have considered, or the principles behind them, can be applied
to your teaching context, in order to add variety to what you do.
Reflection activity 8
Consider a module that
you teach on in your department. Make a list of any of the activities
above that you might like to try in order to widen the range of tasks
that you currently set during your teaching. Which activities would
you definitely NOT be able to use? |
It is hoped that you will have
found at least a few new ideas to try out. If you haven't, perhaps it
is worth asking yourself if there is anything you can do to introduce
variety into the classroom. If you are only repeating tried and trusted
exercises and activities, this may ultimately become demotivating for
the students.
KEY ISSUES FOR TEACHING
(5)
- It is useful to
match the writing tasks you set with the students' real-life needs,
but this is not always possible (see the first section of this
module).
- Some teachers say
'this activity will not work with my students'. However, if you
try it, you may be pleasantly surprised at the results.
