11.3.1
The role of translation theory

Although translation theory is not the main focus of this module, and although you may not be teaching a translation-specific course, it is important to be aware of some theoretical concepts, so that you can take them into account when designing translation tasks for use in the classroom. In the case of translation activities used with advanced students, or of translation-specific programmes, the teaching of these theoretical aspects should be integrated into the syllabus. The purpose is to raise students' awareness of the translating process, to give them the necessary 'tools', and to introduce a metalanguage in which both teachers and students can talk about translating processes, problems, etc (see Mason, 1987).
